When a family is called to homeschool their children, that decision should not be hindered by a lack of finances. HomeLife Academy (HLA) never wants to refuse a family registration and has committed itself to assisting qualified HLA families in need. Through the HLA Box Tops for Education fundraising program, more than $22,000 has been raised in scholarship money over the past five years to ensure no HLA family is denied the opportunity to homeschool.
“All money collected from Box Tops is used for scholarship money to help our families in need to be able to register with HLA,” said Toni Garner, HLA Billing and Financial Services Team Leader. “We give full and partial-needs-based scholarships to families that have been with us at least one year and show a financial need.”
When redeemed, Box Tops translate into real money at a value of 10 cents each. That may not sound like a lot, but the efforts of many HLA families in collecting and submitting their Box Tops to Garner, who coordinates the program, has been a real blessing to a number of families over the years.
“During 2012-2013, we earned $5,907 for our scholarship fund and were able to bless about 50 families,” said Garner. “On years we do not raise as much money through Box Tops, of course, the number of families we are able to help decreases.”
To encourage families to participate in collecting and submitting their Box Tops, HLA holds a contest every year that begins February 16 and runs through February 15 of the following year.
“All you do is purchase what you normally buy at the store and if it has a “Box Tops for Education” on it, cut it out and save them for HLA. Once you get several collected or by February 15 of each year, put them into groups of 50 in Ziploc bags or something similar making sure none of them are expired and then mail to me. On February 15, we get a final total and choose our top winner,” said Garner.
Participants are rewarded in the following manner:
First Place: One (1) year free registration and a $200 check for books or whatever you would like.
Second Place: One (1) year free registration and a $75 check.
Third Place: One (1) year free registration and a $50 check.
Fourth Place: One (1) year free registration and a $25 check.
Fifth Place: One (1) year free registration chosen from a random drawing of all remaining participants.

Garner noted it is never too early or too late to mail in Box Tops, but did stress an important reminder.
“We cannot accept expired Box Tops,” said Garner. “If you are mailing in Box Tops that will expire soon, please note that on the envelope or box. We also cannot accept “Labels for Education”, which is a different program. We have people that mail those in with Box Tops from time to time, but we can’t use them.”
Although the contest is currently in progress, it is not too late for your family to start collecting and submitting Box Tops today. You may even be one of the winners, along with the families who will be blessed by the scholarships HLA is able to provide through your efforts.
All Box Tops submissions should be mailed to Toni Garner – Box Tops Coordinator, P.O. Box 405 Oakland, Tennessee 38060. You may contact Toni by telephone at (888) 560-0774, ext. 3508 or by e-mail for more information about the fundraising program.
