In April, I wrote an article for the Homeschooling in Williamson County blog discussing the recent changes in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) bylaws which now allow homeschoolers to remain fully enrolled with their church-related umbrella schools when applying for eligibility to try out with a local public or private school member team. While this means your student will be able to stay enrolled with HomeLife Academy, enjoying all the services and benefits of enrollment including transcripts and a diploma, they must ALSO be registered with the local education agency (LEA) as an independent homeschooler as well.

Below are a few VERY IMPORTANT DEADLINES you must meet if your student is considering taking advantage of this change and is hoping to try out for their local team.

August 1 – Submit a Notice of Intent to Homeschool with your LEA
August 15 – Make application to participate with the Principal and/or Athletic Director of the public or private school where the student wishes to participate.

Along with these deadlines, you should also be aware of some key additional requirements that come with registration with the LEA:

  • Your student will be required to take the same standardized tests administered to public school students in grades 5, 7 and 9.
  • You will be required to submit to the LEA the names, number, ages and grade level of the children being registered along with the location of the school (your home), the proposed curriculum to be used, the proposed hours of instruction and the qualifications of the parent-teachers.
  • You will be required to submit attendance records to the LEA at the end of the school year.
  • Proof of vaccination must be submitted to the LEA.

For more information regarding the requirements associated with registering as an “independent homeschooler”, we suggest reviewing Homeschool Legal Defense Associations “A Legal Analysis” for Tennessee. This is what they refer to as “Option 1: Home School Statute”.
