A camera, cell phone or anything you can use to take a picture is all you need to compete in the Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) Photography Contest. With so many devices available to people now, just about everyone is a “photographer”. If you think you are one too, grab your device and snap one, two or three shots of something cool and submit your pictures. Homeschool children, ages seven through 19 years old, are encouraged to participate in this contest, which benefits the HSLDA Home School Foundation.

To make it interesting and give students an opportunity for creativity, there are three categories, each with a different theme. Children, ages seven through 10 years old, will be on a hunt so they can take a photo of something that is “Funny”.

What makes you laugh so hard that your sides hurt? Is it when your kitten chases a ball of yarn around the house? When making dinner gets ridiculously messy? Share a photo or two that reveals your sense of humor. ~ HSLDA

Children, ages 11 to 14 years old, will focus on a photo that is “Outdated”.

Just about anywhere you look, you can find interesting little pieces of the recent past (or not-so-recent past). Whether it’s an unopened glass soda bottle from the thrift store down the road, or your Grandma’s 1960s wedding dress in her closet, go on a hunt and take some pictures of those outdated treasures. ~ HSLDA

If you are 15 to 19 years old, find a photo you think is “Captivating”.

It happens to all of us. No one expects to be taken by surprise, and yet we are! Once in a while, one of those surprises arrests our senses and seemingly pauses time. Take a spontaneous photo or plan to take one—either way, share some of those surprises! ~ HSLDA

Contestants will be recognized as first, second and third places, and honorable mention in each category. Winners will also receive a cash prize. HSLDA will display the top 15 photographs in each category at its headquarters in Purcellville, Virginia.

Do you want to compete? If you have camera skills, that is great! If not, do not let that stop you. See what you can come up with when you put a camera in your hand. This is your opportunity to show your creativity and your perspective may be the winning photograph. See winning entries from previous years.

You do not have to be an HSLDA member to participate. An entry fee does apply as $10 per submitted photograph for HSLDA members and $15 per submitted photograph for non-HSLDA members. All photography contestants must be specific contest age on June 1. Submissions must be postmarked by Wednesday, August 1. Learn more about the contest.
