When I was a child, my family had several different Christmas season traditions besides the usual giving of gifts, tree decoration, and Christmas parties.
Maybe the following activities will give you some fresh ideas for celebrating this year or maybe even new yearly traditions to begin.
All over the world, families celebrate Christmas. See if there are any foods or traditions where you live or even where your family comes from. For example, my ancestors are from Germany, where they make a special Christmas bread. My family has made that bread every year, sometimes with extra to give away. It is a fun project for the whole family to do together.
Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus, so you could read His birth story in one of the 4 Gospels. Each one covers a different part of the narrative. There are actually several different Bible passages that are Christmas-themed, though, so you could also read Micah 5, Isaiah 9, or Psalm 22. This is a great way to remember the reason for the Christmas celebration with the family.
We sometimes even acted out parts of the Nativity story together. We would record ourselves playing different roles and using speaking lines directly from Scripture. Not only was it a method to solidify the story in my young mind, but it was also really fun to watch them later.
Recently, we have set up a secret Santa Christmas gift exchange for family and/or friends. It is pretty exciting to get a gift but not know who it is from. And it’s also fun to find a secret and targeted gift for one very specific person! With the technology we have available now, you could even organize a video call with everyone involved while opening the gifts.
This year, let’s be intentional about your celebration! If any of these traditions give you ideas, that’s great. They have definitely been special for me and my family.
