While I was in high school, I wondered (and I am sure our students are wondering the same thing): “Why am I learning all this? When am I actually going to use it?”

It really wasn’t until my early 30’s when I actually understood why I learned what I did, especially when it comes to courses like Math and Personal Finance.

Math and Personal Finance are two of the most practical and empowering subjects we are taught and that we may teach our homeschoolers, because their impact extends far beyond the classroom (or dining room). From budgeting monthly expenses to understanding credit, loans, and investments, these skills form the foundation for smart financial decision making that can stick with us our whole lives.

I’ve found that even a decade after graduating college, I’m still learning about different types of financing, and I use math more often in everyday life than I ever expected. I continue to learn about new finance strategies (like investing or planning for retirement) from some amazing podcasts and audiobooks, which shows just how important these subjects are long-term.

Whether your student wants to own rental property, invest in stocks and bonds, get a business degree, own their own business, or be a housewife, teaching our students how to calculate interest, compare prices, or even build savings doesn’t just help them pass a test; it equips them to navigate adult responsibilities with confidence. When students grasp the real-life value of these subjects, they gain tools that can set them up for a stable and successful future.

These subjects are not just academics – they’re essential life tools!
